Ricard Bofill is an architect who found an old crumbling cement factory back in the 1970s. Being an architect, he was able to immediately see a vision for the old place. Called La Fabrica, the place has been completely transformed.
Located just outside Barcelona, Spain, the factory was shut down decades ago. It’s no a totally modern place to live and work.
Bofill calls the place a work in progress and he continues to make upgrades and changes.
When Bofill saw this factory, he bought it right away and began the transformation. That included adding greenery inside and out.
One look at the place and you can hardly imagine that it was once a crumbling factory. Now it’s a totally modern place to live.
Lots of Green
Bofill started planting immediately after buying the factory. Now much of the interior and exterior are covered in plants.
As you can see here, some of the factory details remain. However, Bofill has remade them into a totally one-of-a-kind home.
“The Cement Factory is a place of work par excellence,” Bofill shares on his personal website. Look at those colors!
Bofill says that each room is different and has it’s own personality. No two rooms look like each other, which is quite a feat in such a large place.
Bofill says, “I have the impression of living… in a closed universe which protects me from the outside and everyday life.” Talk about a personal sanctuary.
Work and Play
He goes on to say, “Life goes on here in a continuous sequence, with very little difference between work and leisure.” That sounds like anyone’s dream home.
Bofill’s creation is packed with little pockets of relaxation. There are lounging areas both inside and outside the home.
Part of the old factory is part of Bofill’s studio. He does a great job of blending work and play inside his home.
Grass and Trees
The exterior of the home is mostly covered in grass, but there are some trees there too. You can see palm, eucalyptus and olive trees throughout the outside.
Like a Castle
Bofill likes to compare the outside of the home to a romantic ruin. With all the greenery, it sort of looks like an abandoned castle.
Work in Progress
It might look finished, but Bofill continues to work on the factory. It keeps getting better and better.
