All artists have their favorite medium. Sidrit Vaqari has been a sculptor for nearly 20 years and his passion is realistic looking smoking pipes. Each is modeled after an epic movie character.
Vaqari says that Gandalf, from “The Lord of the Rings,” is his biggest inspiration.
Vaqari uses materials such as this 50 year old briarwood to make his realistic looking creations.
Old and Strong
He says that this type of wood is old and strong, which makes it a good choice for carving.
Vaqari says that he only uses knives to do his carvings.
A Month of Work
It took about a month to get this far on his pipe, but Vaqari says it’s almost finished.
Arrow for a Tamper
Vaqari also carved an intricate arrow that can be used as a tamper for the pipe.
Gimli, Son of Gloin
This is another pipe inspired by a movie and that is nearing completion.
Vaqari reports that Gandalf is one of his favorite characters and has given him quite a bit of inspiration.
It takes an average of about 250 hours for Vaqari to complete each of his designs.
Darth Maul with Gimli
The more epic the character, the higher the chance that Vaqari will take the time to make a carving of him or her.
Though all of his work is detailed, Vaqari says this pipe was one of the most difficult.
Here’s another peek at the incredible amount of work that goes into one of these pipes.
Gandalf the White
This is more proof that Gandalf has a prominent place in Vaqari’s work.
The Pipe Team
Vaqari calls this collection of recreations of Michelangelo his Pipe Team.
