From the half man and half horse Centaur to the flying horse of the Pegasus, when our very (very) distant ancestors imagined up a new mythological creature, the idea was usually to combine features of multiple already existing animals to create this new epic monster.
Need a regal, king creature to rule over all the others? What two animals have more of a reputation for reigning over their domain quite like the eagle and the lion? And thus, the Griffin is born. Want a formidable, imposing force to guard the gates of the underworld? A three headed dog might do the trick on its own, but give it the tail of a serpent and there’s truly no way to get past Cerberus.
Sadly however, with the exception of the great Jackalope of the midwestern United States, the great tradition of mixing and matching to create new beasts has long fallen out of style. Until today.
Check out some new prototypes and ideas for what could hopefully become the basis of the new myths of our future.
