Jaquie Goncher was paralyzed from the neck down at age 17, but she didn’t let that stop her from walking down the aisle on her wedding day. Goncher was injured in a swimming accident and was told she would never walk again. While she could stand just a few months later, she does mostly rely on her wheelchair.
After many years of being frustrated with her progress and inability to do all the things she did before, Goncher came close to giving up. When she got engaged, she decided she would walk by her wedding day. Love Stories by Us, a photography company, captures the moment Goncher has been working on for a year.
She was able to walk down the aisle and even dance a little at the reception. What a beautiful memory for her big day!

Due to the severity of the injury, Goncher’s doctors told her she would probably never walk again.

She had a hard time with therapy for the first few years after the injury because she was used to being an athlete.

“The first time I decided to go back to the gym, I got on a stationary bike. My legs wouldn’t be able to push it fast enough and the machine would turn off,” said Jaquie.

“I got so upset that I put my head down on the machine and I just started to cry,” she adds.

It took Goncher a long time before she was comfortable going back to the gym.

Her upcoming wedding proved to be the perfect incentive.

“On your wedding day, everybody’s looking at you, so you want to feel the most beautiful. I totally believe you can be bomb in a wheelchair, but I didn’t want to be defined by that,” says Goncher.

She approached the aisle seated in her wheelchair, with her mom and grandpa on either side of her.

But she soon stunned everyone by standing up and walking down the aisle.

Of course, the groom was moved to tears, even though he knew she was planning to walk.

In fact, the photos show that nearly every single guest had tears in their eyes as Jaquie as walked toward her groom.

Just a year ago, Goncher couldn’t be on her feet for more than 30 minutes at a time.

On her wedding day, she stood for the 45 minute ceremony with ease.

Later, she was able to dance at her own reception.

“He was my cane, because I would hold on to him the entire time,” Jaquie says of her groom, Andy.

“It’s been really emotional. Sometimes I don’t realize how miraculous it is that I am walking.”
